Not to dispute your claims, or to throw a wet blanket over this thread in general, but the attached 2007 article from PSA's esteemed Sports Market Report (SMR) makes no mention of these alleged misdeeds by sSs Sportscards.

Well, in an indirect way it does:

Quote:
"Our philosophy has always been to be able to provide our customers with high quality cards without having to wait till a card is located or comes available at auction," said Mark [Skerbe].
If that's not code for "We'll make some new PSA 9s and 10s for you whenever you need them," I don't know what is.

Now that's an interesting thought. It would almost be an automated process: New card graded; new altered card found.

Made to order cards. What a concept.

Set registry is the “cigarette boat in the driveway” for all the neighbors to marvel at for those who don’t venture outdoors.

No doubt! These guys do amazing work. I am just trying to catalog it all to make it easier for people to access.

How do these guys get away with this? I'd like someone to point them out to me at a show.

Because the buyers don’t care about the card, only the flip. If buyers valued unmolested cards as much as PSA grades then these would be far less prevalent.

Over a period time, PSA cultivated an environment that promoted card molestation. Known card molesters were given privileged submission status and glowing SMR featured writeups. Those who committed the greatest atrocities were the most highly promoted among PSA Set Registry collectors. The endgame was the number on the holder, not the actual condition of the entombed trading card. The biggest crooks reaped the greatest financial rewards, siphoned from the wallets of honest collectors.

Well said.

And nice work by Corndog outing that Banks. I wonder what percentage of bad cards in TPG holders have been uncovered here on BO. I truly believe the answer is about 1%.

The vast majority will never be outed, that's for sure. Countless cards purchased raw at shows and hacked, untraceable.

Probably more than 1% but not that much more. I have posted numerous times and been ridiculed or attacked that a very high percentage of cards in holders have been worked on. Maybe not all have undergone trimming or recoloration like the majority of the material pointed out on BO but few will submit a card without preparing it for submission. Some of that is innocent and some not so much.

I turnover a lot of inventory so I am constantly shopping and it is astounding to me sometimes what gets holdered. I cannot explain how some of this stuff gets by. For the 17 people in the hobby who care, high grade and high value cards (regardless of condition) are the prime targets.

I can also think of 3 to 4 big name dealers (some outed in the PSA insider letter) who were on pins and needles until the Worthpoint data dump.

Has there been any similar allegations against BGS?

To be fair, I don't think anyone accused Joe of altering cards, the concern with him was that he got more favorable grading.

I haven't graded cards in three years or so. Might send some to CSG in the future.
