Thanks so much! This is like a punch in the stomach to me. I've been reading these posts for months. Horrible what these crooks have done to the hobby. Only the work you and others have done to bring this to light has even tried to stop this steamroller. A debt that can never adequately be paid is due you guys by the hobby.

It wasn't even graded until late 2017.

$100M is nothing though, and as time ticks on it’s looking likely.

We’ll use nice round numbers:

So far BO has uncovered 400 cards totaling $1M in altered profits (it’s actually fewer cards and higher profits) for an average value gain of $2500 per card (again, the actual average value is higher than this).

If we maintain that $2500 altered profit average, the “conservers” will have need to have passed along a total of 40,000 cards to hit $100M in fraud.

eBay is the biggest singular card marketplace. They move between 15M-16M cards a year when you account for Baseball, Basketball, Football, and Hockey. This means that if just 0.25% of the cards (1:400) sold through eBay have been altered in one year, we’ve hit our number. If we go back 5 years we need to only have 0.05% of cards (1:2000) to have been altered to hit our number. Hell, PWCC gets 40,000+ worth of feedback every 6 months.

That’s not including what’s passed through auction houses, COMC, the forums, FB, local shows which probably encompass the same amount, if not more than eBay.

Also, that’s not accounting for blatant market manipulation, patch swapping, autograph forging, and the rest. That’s just trimmed cards. Even if the averages are smaller (and from what we actually know the averages are larger) it’s not some gigantic leap to state that the collecting hobby has been defrauded in excess of $100 million.

I think your average gain per card is extremely high. The problem is that the easy cards to identify are the high end ones. But even cards like Jordan rookies would take forever to sift through thousands. I think the average trimmers are happy with a few hundred per card that don't raise any eyebrows.

This card was found by All Night Rocker, who uncovered those altered T206 Cobbs a few days ago. This card was slightly trimmed on the left edge. However, the grade actually decreased. The hobby talk of PSA being tougher more recently might apply to grading a card as it appears, but certainly not to detecting alterations. The green box shows the trimmed edge. Purple circles are common print marks.

Of course it is. Because they are uncovering the higher dollar, obvious cards. Those will dry up at some point. There are only so many $10,000 cards. But there are countless lower end ones that I'm sure have been trimmed.

The above card literally lost money.

eBay does 2000+ $10K+ cards a year, so roughly 6 a day. There are 3 $50K+ cards moving a week through eBay alone.

I could literally have 20:1 cards that LOSE value after alteration and as long as I’ve got my $50K plus card I’m maintaining my average. So out of the 65 total 1951 Mantles that the SMR states are worth $50K+ I just have to sneak 1 of my trim jobs in there. For that matter almost half the Pop on the 51 is worth $10K+.

It’s really NOT that tough to figure this out...

Again, if that average ISN’T maintained, that means that even MORE cards are sneaking through to drop the average down which would still lead you to the same end result except instead of 40K cards moving to get that 9 figure number you’ve moved 50,60,70K. That’s just math.

Countless is the key word there. We will never know the full extent, but I'm guessing it's many, many times the known number.

Joe Orlando was right in his most recent statement. It is an impossible job to do. It can't be done. He basically admitted that his own company cannot do the job it purports to be able to do. The vintage market is absolutely, 100% tarnished and every single card that is purchased in a PSA case should be assumed altered if you do not know the exact provenance of said card. I think the only thing safe at this point are 1/1's because even if the card is altered, it is still the only one out there. This is really sad.

This, vintage is in big trouble. But what about 80’s early 90’s stuff? Is the Jordan fleer rookie ruined too? I’m sure it’s just as easily trimmed? This is an absolute disaster. Depressing really

So if we just take Block’s eBay purchases of PSA Jordan’s (who knows the number he’s purchased outside of eBay), then this 1 individual has purchased 1.1% of the entire Jordan RC Pop.

If turning an 8 into a 9 nets you $2.5K (SMR), an 8 into a 10 nets you $20K+, a 9 to 10 nets you $20K.

So effectively he’d have to have turned 25 of his 197 (1 for every 8) PSA purchases into a 10. That would come out to $500K worth of Jordan 10s

Even if he wasn’t hitting 10s at that clip, the other cards also add to his bottom line (7 to 8 gains $1K). Block would need $497K worth of profit to maintain the $2.5K average I surmised above. Completely possible.

That’s just 1 guy with 1 card.
