Mike Trout took soft toss and jogged outside on the field prior to Monday’s game.

“I feel great, I feel fine and I’m progressing the way I should be,” Trout said. “It’s good to get out there and start moving around instead of being in the weight room and the cage. It’s all about the progression of running. I feel good hitting. I took 30 swings out there with no pain at all.” Trout is aiming to return from knee surgery late this month.

What’s the consensus among Trout collectors now that some time has passed since the injury?

He’s still a 3x MVP and a future HOFer. Though no postseason heroics to speak of amd the Angels don’t seem like they will improve any time soon.

Are you still buying cards of his or are you selling them? Holding until he inevitably enters the Hall of Fame?

I'm still buying but also trading some Trout cards for other Trout cards.

I'm a collector.

Not buying. There will be better buying opportunities further along the road as the wheels continue to fall off.

He will never win a World Series or MVP again. Its all downhill from here, yes hes a guarenteed hall of famer, but what could have been.

At his age and constant injury history its hard to think otherwise.

That’s fair. I think he just needs to go to a new/better team

His skills aren’t that diminished. If he can keep semi healthy there’s no reason he can’t have a few more years as a DH.

Trout heading to AAA for a rehab assignment. Some 20 year old pitcher that's going to be selling insurance in 3 years is going to have a story for a lifetime.

Previously they were saying a rehab assignment would likely be avoided. Guess they changed their mind and wanted true game full go reps

He has missed 62% of the team’s games since the start of 2017. I agree that he makes the Hall, but can anyone name another HOFer who missed THAT much time due to anything other than military service?

Not a knock on the guy - just trying to find a barometer for the situation?

If you look at Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols after age 32 you see a large dropoff like nearly every other baseball player that did not take steroids.

His skills will automatically diminish simply because of age. The fact he has had constant injuries over the last 4 years further impacts him.

Age 20-29

.307 BA, .422 OBA, .588 SLG, 1.011 OPS

Age 30

.283 BA, .369 OBA, .630 SLG, .999 OPS

Age 31

.263 BA, .367 OBA, .490 SLG, .858 OPS

Age 32

.220 BA, .325 OBA, .541 SLG, .867 OPS

We should expect a further dropoff now that he is 32. If you look at prime(pre age 32) Griffey, F.Thomas, Cabrera, Pujols and compare it against their post 32 stats you tend to see an average of a 50 point dropoff in batting average alone. OBA takes a nearly 100 point drop off. Slugging% is about 150 points while OPS is nearly 200 point drop.

The people that were bullish on Trout and placing him in the same category as Rusth, Mays, Gehrig, Williams, Musial, etc were generally looking at his prime 8 years (2011-2019) and basically expecting Trout to play exactly the same his entire career. If so, he'd have a chance to be in that category. But what differentiates those great hall of famers is they were able to play at an elite level most of their career. Nearly all of those players also had 2300+ hits nearly 500 home runs by age 32.

Trout is not struggling to possibly even get 2000 hits and 500 homeruns. He might get but it will be a challenge. None of those people that elevated his status bothered to consider that Trout would diminish the second half of his career. Once his career numbers have been finalized they should look something like this.

His final stats after his career is over should look something like this.

7902 AB - 166th all time
2245 hits - 173rd all time
421 doubles - 157th all time
62 triples - 498th all time
521 home runs - 20th all time
1277 RBIs - 94th all time
1334 walks - 39th all time
2169 k's - 6th all time
.284 BA - 530th all time
.387 OBA - 128th all time
.550 SA - 29th all time
.937 OBA - 36th all time

Hall of Fame stats but more in the Harmon Killebrew category of Hall of Famers and pretty distant from the likes of Mays, Aaron, Pujols, Ruth, and Gehrig.

I don't think anyone was predicting 10 WAR seasons through his 40th birthday when they were projecting him to be an all time great. They were simply not factoring in missing 2/3 of every season for the rest of his career. Besides Pujols he's one of the only players I've been a fan of post 90s players and I'll say he's one of the top 10 players I've ever seen, but I think these injuries have completely dashed his "inner circle" chances. I hope I'm wrong and he pops 550+ home runs and finishes as a 120+ WAR player, but it's hard to see that happening considering recent history.

It will definitely cone down to health. I'm hoping he can put together a few more nice healthy seasons.

I know as a baseball fan it sucks because when I go to watch the mlb app I don't really go to Angels games any more.

Mike trout was mantle mays Aaron etc

So many of these hall of famers that just played a long time to rack up huge stats never were that

I could care less where he ends statiscally

For a decade he was one of the greatest players who ever played the game

I will take that over stats any day

The Angels announced that Mike Trout left his first rehab game after 2 innings with left knee soreness

Can't complete 2 innings now?
