Default I know Chapelle was the man...but was this really where "KOBE" came from?

I hear it all the time. I teach middle school, and every time a kid shoots a paper ball or random trash into a trash can, they say "Kobe!" as it's on its way. I heard it before then too, back in college and in various retail jobs I had. It feels like this saying has been around a while.

So after seeing a gif from The Chapelle Show in offtopic today, I wondered what the source was. And the internet SEEMS to say that the source is...The Chapelle Show. Which would mean that every time one of the kids in my class yells "Kobe" and throws a dead highlighter towards the trash, they are referencing this:

Anyone know if people were doing "Kobe" before Chapelle came along? Just wondering, weird thoughts for a Sunday I guess.

Probably some of the students have seen the reference, but the majority just say it because they saw someone else say it.

Exactly what I thought, it's just interesting to think that a sketch like this spawned something that is so universal now.

I think kids just say that when emulating their favorite player. Nothing to do with chappelle.

When I was a kid in school playin basketball I'd say my favorite player at the times name as I shot the ball.

Everybody did it. At least where I grew up.

My friend liked Bill Wennigton so he'd say "Wennignton!!" Before he shot the ball.

I'd say "Jordan".

FWIW, I have never heard of this until this thread.

Dang, that's interesting. You have not taught enough or played enough pickup basketball.

That "love contract" clip was to verify consensual relations (to keep it clean). He yelled Kobe because of what was going on at the time with Kobe in Denver imo

All these other names are interesting. But I've never heard a kid say LEBRON or KEVIN or KYRIE (we're in Cavs country and they love him). It's always KOBE. So I think Chapelle must have made KOBE the popular one at least.
